Description
On February 6, 1991 Captain Robert Swain Jr. of the Air Force Reserve's 706th TFS (out of New Orleans) made a small bit of history when he greased an Iraqi BO-105 helicopter with the 30mm cannon of the A-10 seen above. It was the first kill scored by an A-10 (a second would be made by Captain Todd Sheehy of the 511th TFS eleven days later), and the 33rd of the whole war. The bird current sits on the grounds of the US Air Force Academy, Swain being a graduate of the establishment. I was able to pay a visit to the display to get a better idea of the markings in addition to the usual image search on teh interwebz and get a better idea of the exact post-kill markings. I never noticed it before, but apparently the A-10s of the USAF don't carry the "slime strips" that many other jets do, which makes sense since they are intended as daytime/fair weather attack birds for the most part.

An amazingly feat via the Thunderbolt II.
