A sad day has come as the USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered carrier, comes into port for the last time. Big E has been soldiering along since the 1960s. she's been a good boat too and has plenty to show for her service.

Some of her honors (just a few though)
-the first and only ship of her class
-the first nuclear flatop of course
-The Cuban Missile Crisis
-the boat for the first F-14 deployment (VF-1 and VF-2)
-Deployments to Vietnam (including at the very end for Operation Frequent Wind and one cruise having a MiG kill earned by VF-96)
-Operation Desert Fox
-Operation Allied Force
-Operation Enduring Freedom
-Operation Iraqi Freedom
-Operation Southern Watch

So I give my respects to the Enterprise and hope that she rests in peace (I wish she could become a museum but the Navy having to tear out the reactors once she's officially out will nullify that idea)

Well she was starting to get on in years. She's nearly 60 now.

A US navy with an "Enterprise" just ain't right. But I don't think we'll have to worry about that for too long. Who know, maybe one of the new Gerald Ford class carriers will be named Enterprise.
